Fire Door Safety Week 2023
This Fire Door Safety Week (25-29 September), we’re reminding our customers living in our mid-rise and high-rise blocks to check their front doors.
Your front door is a fire safety door, to keep you and others living in your building safe from fire. A fire door is more than just an ordinary door; it plays a vital role in delaying the spread of smoke and fire by making sure that if a fire does break out, it can be contained by trapping the smoke and fire and allowing time for people to get out and making the fire easier to tackle.
There are five easy steps you can take to check your fire door, called the ‘Fire Door Five’:
- Check for proof of certification (to be sure it’s really a fire door)
- Look at the size of the gaps (check the gaps around the top and sides are consistently less than 4mm when the door’s closed)
- Check the seal condition (seals should be intact with no signs of damage)
- Check the hinge fixing (hinges should be firmly fixed with no missing or broken screws)
- Make sure it closes properly (a fire door only works if it’s closed)
For all our customers living in blocks over 11 metres high (or five storeys and above), we carry out regular checks of fire doors.
To make sure your fire door is as safe as possible, remember:
- Fire doors should be kept shut when not in use
- You shouldn’t tamper with the self-closing devices
- You should report any faults or damage to the door to us immediately
