Important information for XL Bully owners
The government’s added the XL Bully dog to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
If you own an XL Bully dog, you need to comply with all the new requirements for this breed of dog.
From 31 December 2023 it became illegal to:
- breed
- sell or advertise,
- exchange, gift, rehome,
- abandon,
- or allow XL Bully type dogs to stray.
If you want to keep your XL Bully dog, you must apply for a Certificate of Exemption by 31 January 2024. Once you’ve got your certificate you need to let us know so our records are up to date. You can do this by emailing tenancymanagement@goldinghomes.org.uk or by calling 0300 777 2600.
Georgina Pennicott, Golding Homes’ Tenancy Manager said:
“We understand that for many people pets are an important member of the family and offer companionship. We want customers that own XL Bully dogs to be able to continue to have them living with them legally. It’s essential that you apply and secure the certificate of exemption by 31 January as well as get your dog neutered and take-out third-party liability insurance. It’s also really important that we know about your dog so we can keep our records updated and carry out checks if required.”
From 1 February 2024 it’ll be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales unless the dog has a Certificate of Exemption. You’ll also need to keep your dog on a lead and muzzled when walking them in public and in cars.
