Enjoying Bonfire Night Safely
Ahead of Bonfire Night this weekend, we want to share some tips and best practice for enjoying the festivities safely.
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by going to an organised public event, but we know that’s not possible for everyone.
Fireworks can be dangerous if they’re not used properly, so if you’re having fireworks at home, follow this advice to stay safe while having fun:
- Only buy fireworks from licenced shops and read and follow the instructions properly
- Keep a safe distance, lighting fireworks at arms-length and standing well back
- Keep naked flames (like cigarettes) away from fireworks
- Keep fireworks in a closed box and only use one at a time
- Don’t return to a firework that hasn’t gone off
- Always supervise children and don’t give sparklers to under-5s
- Keep your bonfire well away from houses, trees and hedges
- Keep some buckets of water nearby
- Be considerate of neighbours and let them know your plans, particularly if they have pets
You can find more information and advice on the Government website and from the British Fireworks Association.
