Golding Homes brings 5000 Poppies Project to Maidstone
Golding Homes is inviting the local community to get involved in a project to knit and crochet over 5000 poppies to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice.
These poppies will form part of a tribute display at Maidstone Museum in November 2018.
The 5000 poppies, which is part of a wider project, was the inspiration of two Australian women, Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight, to honour their fathers who fought in World War 2. This has become an international tribute of respect and remembrance to those who have served in war, conflict and peacekeeping operations, their families and their communities.
After the success of a similar project in Medway, that saw over 22,500 poppies being installed into the Royal Engineers Museum in November 2017, Golding Homes looks forward to bringing this project to Maidstone for 2018.
Alexandra Gurr, Exhibitions Development Officer at Maidstone Museum said: “We are thrilled to be involved with the 5000 poppies project. Our ‘Coming Home’ exhibition explored the beginning of the First World War, so we feel that the final display of poppies created by the people of Maidstone is a fitting commemoration marking the centenary of the Armistice. We are very much looking forward to seeing the museum covered in poppies.”
Community Development Advisor for Golding Homes, Sarah Leipnik said: “After supporting the Medway 5000 Poppies project last year with a Community Chest Fund, it inspired us to launch a similar project involving the local communities across Maidstone to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice this year.
“Knitting has become an emerging hobby for many which can involve a wide audience from senior citizens to primary school children and we are hoping this project, which provides such a poignant symbol of remembrance, will inspire many to pick up their needles and get knitting.”
You can drop off your finished poppies at any of the following collection points: Maidstone Museum, Abacus Furniture Store Shepway, Involve Hub, Maidstone Mall, Hobby Craft Maidstone and Fusion Healthy Living Centre, Park Wood.
