Golding Homes’ tea party for older people sparks new friendships

Nearly 60 residents from Golding Homes’ sheltered schemes enjoyed an afternoon of tea and live entertainment at Maidstone Skills Centre, Senacre on Monday to celebrate International Older People’s Day.
Hosted by Golding Vision, the community arm of local housing association Golding Homes, the tea party provided the opportunity for residents who live alone and may feel isolated to come together to socialise with others and spark new friendships.
The afternoon included live music from Kent based vintage swing duo, Swing Noir and a chance to vote online for their favourite gardens from the Golding Homes annual Garden competition. They were also given some handy tips on surfing the internet for those wishing to brush up on their digital skills.
84 year old Evelyn Longley from Shepway had not been able to leave her home since March due to mobility issues, but thanks to the free transport offered by Medway Norse and the Garden of England Day Care she was able to attend the tea party with her daughter Jenny, who said: “Mum really enjoyed herself and was able to meet lots of new people. It’s been a really good afternoon.”
This is just one of many events organised by Golding Vision within the local community to support older residents who feel socially isolated to meet new people. Details of future events can be found on Golding Homes’ website.
