What steps can I take to reduce condensation in my home?

  • Close doors to bedrooms and bathrooms when bathing to stop moisture travelling into the bedroom and other rooms in your home
  • Dry clothes outside wherever possible
  • If you dry clothes inside use an airer instead of hanging over a radiator; remember to open a window and close the door
  • If you use a tumble dryer make sure it is vented to the outside
  • Leave lids on pots and pans whilst cooking
  • Use an extractor fan or cooker extractor hood if you have one
  • Heat your home on a low temperature all day
  • Use central heating, not bottled gas heaters
  • Open windows slightly for 15-20 minutes each morning, preferably on both sides of your home
  • Use trickle vents on windows if fitted
  • Ventilate bedrooms by leaving a window slightly open at night
  • Keep air vents clear of obstructions
  • Leave small gaps between furniture and external walls
  • Do not overfill your wardrobes and cupboards

What steps can I take to get rid of mould?

  • For tiles use a toothbrush dipped in bleach or diluted vinegar. Leave it to soak for 15 minutes  before rinsing well
  • Stained sealant may have to be cut out and reapplied
  • Mould on shower curtains can be removed using a diluted mix of bleach and water. Spray it on, then wipe it off
  • You can tackle mould on walls, window frames and ceilings by using an anti-mould spray; most good DIY shops will stock this
  • If redecorating try to use a good quality fungicidal paint.
