Mayor of Ashford opens new supported housing scheme for vulnerable young people

The Mayor of Ashford, Winston Michael, officially opened Belgic Court, a new supported housing scheme in Ashford.

Belgic Court at The Limes, Ashford, supports vulnerable young people with their transition from care to independent living and consists of eight self-contained fully furnished one bedroom flats and a communal facility.

The scheme has been developed by Golding Homes in partnership with Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council, and is now managed by Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL).

Belgic Court provides housing-related support to 16-25 year olds who need help in developing the necessary life skills to live independently.  As part of this support they are taught how to maintain a tenancy, receive assistance with training and job opportunities as well as being given help and advice with budgeting and confidence building

In the Mayor’s opening speech, he said: “Belgic Court brings invaluable support and inspiration to vulnerable young people to make that transition from care to independent living.  By doing so, this will give them self-esteem and self-worth whilst at the same time increasing their life chances.  It is a shining example of what can be achieved through partnership and one vision, so thank you to Golding Homes, Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council.”

21 year old Corinna Taylor moved into her new flat three months ago, she said: “It’s like a fresh start for me and I’m really enjoying my freedom and independence.  I’m learning how to manage my bills and haven’t been in debt since moving here.  Hopefully in two years’ time I will be able to rent my own home and I’m really excited about the future.”

Chris Blundell, Director of Development and Commercial Services at Golding Homes said: “Belgic Court demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration and partnership working and I want to play tribute to the huge number of people who have contributed to the success of this worthwhile project.  It has been an eventful journey and we are really delighted to see the completion of this important purpose built scheme to support young people leaving care.”

SSL Regional Service Manager Leslie Morson said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic scheme and we are really pleased to be able to work with our clients to help them develop the skills they need to live independently.

“It’s important that we give these young people the very best opportunities in life and this can be achieved at Belgic Court by giving them personalised care and support that’s tailored to their individual needs.”
