Reducing the risk of fire

DO:

  • Test your smoke alarms once a week to make sure they work. If you can't find your smoke alarm or it doesn't sound when you press the test button, please tell us.
  • Keep doors closed at night to prevent the spread of fire.
  • Keep lighters and matches out of reach of children.
  • Unplug televisions and other non-essential appliances at night or when not in use.
  • Tie rubbish bags to make sure combustible items such as paper or cardboard are secure. This'll help to reduce unpleasant smells in bin storage areas.

DON'T:

  • Smoke in communal areas and don't leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around.
  • Keep ash trays clean and dispose of any ash.
  • Overload electrical sockets or use appliances with loose connections or damaged cables.
  • Disconnect your smoke alarm if it keeps sounding. Please report the fault to us.
  • Leave candles unattended in a room or in a position that children or pets could knock them.
  • Store barbecues, flammable liquids or domestic waste in communal areas or on balconies.
  • Over-fill chip pans. Never throw water on a chip pan fire.
  • Leave your cooker unattended when in use and avoid leaving children alone in the kitchen when cooking on the hob.
